Announcement: June 28 Meet up and Petition on 150 Bay Street

We hope everyone is doing well and staying as cool as possible during this heat wave!

In case you haven’t heard, there is an active proposal to build a new apartment building at 150 Bay Street in the empty parking lots surrounding Hudson Hall. The project includes up to 1,000 homes that include 150 income-restricted affordable apartments, 100 units of live-work space for artists, as well as space for a new public school and some open space for a public plaza as well.

Nick Zurawski published an op-ed about the project last week in the Hudson County View and on Writer’s Block (link) if you would like to learn more particulars!

Regarding 150 Bay Street, we have good news, bad news, and a plan.

The Good

This project has received a substantial amount of on-the-record support from various local leaders. Mayor Fulop, Mayor Bhalla, Assemblywoman Ramirez, Assemblywoman McCann Stamato, Councilman Saleh, and Katie Brennan are all in favor.

The Bad

This project likely lives or dies based on Councilman Solomon’s support or opposition. We don’t know where he stands on the project as he has been silent on 150 Bay Street.

What we do know is there is some opposition to this project from some wealthy downtown condo owners. If we do nothing, then this project will likely die and those empty parking lots will remain empty parking lots. And downtown will have fewer affordable units available to the 3,000 plus people currently on the affordable housing waiting list.

The Plan

Our plan is to not let 150 Bay Street die for political reasons. We believe that with enough public support and attention drawn to this issue, we can encourage Councilman Solomon to break his silence and come out in support of this project.

Better Blocks and affiliated volunteers have plenty of ideas and we would love to discuss them with you in person this Saturday, June 28th, at 12:30pm at the main library downtown.

  1. Your plan includes 1,000 housing units but offers ZERO parking, and the so-called public space is merely the existing entrance to the 150 Bay building. How is the neighborhood expected to absorb the increased traffic this project will bring? The developer should take greater responsibility and do more to mitigate the impact on local infrastructure and residents.
