On Wednesday, September 23 at 6pm at the Gabert Library, Hudson County is hosting a meeting on the future of bus lanes along Kennedy Boulevard. The meeting is from 6pm to 8pm at 71 Sip Ave, a block from the Journal Square PATH Station and bus terminal.

Tens of thousands of riders rely upon bus service within Hudson County every day, significantly reducing traffic congestion for motorists and automobile pollution for all residents. Yet bus service in Hudson is slow and unreliable, with buses bunched up and stuck in traffic. Bus rapid transit (“BRT”) along Kennedy Blvd would greatly improve service. BRT would being dedicated bus lanes and special boarding platforms so buses don’t need to pull over to load passengers.

Despite its advantages, BRT attracts opposition from motorists who object to the taking of two traffic lanes along the Boulevard as well as, potentially, a limited number of parking spaces along certain stretches. Political will and strong leadership will be needed to follow through on this transformative plan that will improve transit and alleviate car congestion along Hudson County’s most important thoroughfare.

The more support that the plan receives at public meetings like the one to be held on Wednesday, the more likely that the county is to implement a comprehensive BRT plan that substantially improve bus service and reliability.
